Artist Statement
I enjoy seeking out the extraordinary in the ordinary. That is, mundane scenes or subjects often present visually interesting material, which can be further explored through the use of color. A small segment of items placed on a table can become their own miniature landscape, and are rendered to explore the relationships between the objects in space. My work often depicts recognizable subject matter in a way that asks the viewer to take notice of space, shape, and light and appreciate each quality for its own weight and beauty.
Much of my work tends to explore color and all of its possibilities. Interpretation of an object using an altered color palette is a satisfying challenge, as it becomes an exercise in seeing. It creates a new way to connect with the subject that one may not have considered before. In this way, art creates connections for viewers to the previously unknown; we enhance our knowing by exploring the familiar.
